Converting from “pounds” to “grams”
Formula to convert from pounds (lib) to grams (g)
1 pound (lb) = 453.592 grams (g)
1 g = 0.001 kg = 0.00220462 pounds / 1000 g = 1 kg = 2.20462 pounds
Grams in the international measurement system
For a person who uses the imperial weight unit system, it can be complicated, for example, to relate the weight of food if it is specified in the international unit system (SI).
For practical purposes, we will associate the value in grams of a pound with the value of a kilogram. Since a kilogram is a thousand grams (1 kg = 1000 gr) we can say that a thousand grams is 2.20462 pounds. These figures will allow us to make better calculations.
Returning to the previous example, an American customer wants to buy two pounds (2 lb) of bread in a Spanish bakery, but to do so, he needs to know its equivalent in grams. We need to multiply the value of the weight in pounds of bread, per thousand (1000 g = 1 kg) and divide it by the associated value of a kilogram in pounds (2.20462 pounds).
The equivalent of 2 pounds (2 lb) of bread in grams is equal to 907.1858 grams (g).
Brief history of the “gram” (g)
The gram is directly related to the kilogram. A kilogram is made up of a thousand grams (1 kg = 1000 g).
The gram comes from the French word “gravet“.
In 1795, the word “gravet” (and others associated with the term such as “grave” and bar) was replaced by a generic word called “gram“. Based on the gram (g) it was established that a thousand units would represent the kilogram (kg).
